Which H3 is this?
Base H3 — the open-weights model itself, at 2K, with all three modes including reference to video.
The distinction matters because the name is crowded. H3 Max and H3 Max Turbo are separate endpoints post-trained on this model: far faster and cheaper per clip, always with audio, but capped at 768p and with no reference mode. Hailuo 3 and Hailuo 3.0 are this same model under MiniMax's consumer brand. FastH3 and VDN-H3 are community builds of the open weights, not something we serve.
If you arrived from a spec sheet and the numbers here do not line up, that is usually why — the sheet was describing a different endpoint.
Sort out which name is whichH3 or H3 Max?
Resolution against speed, and it is not a close call in either direction.
This page renders at 2K for a flat 26 credits a second — 130 for five seconds. H3 Max Turbo renders 768p for about 20 credits per five-second clip and comes back in roughly the time it takes to watch it. Call it a sixth of the price at under half the pixels.
Pick this one when the frame has to hold up at full size, or when you need reference images to keep a character or product consistent — the Max endpoints have no reference mode at all. Pick Turbo when you are still iterating, or when the clip is bound for a feed where 768p is fine anyway.

Two different billing shapes, and that is the whole answer.
This page bills by the second: 130 credits for five seconds at 2K, whatever aspect ratio you pick. Seedance bills by pixel count, so the same five seconds at 720p is 86 credits at 1:1, 152 at 16:9 and 199 at 21:9. Wide frames cost you there and cost you nothing here.
The gap widens with duration. Fifteen seconds at 2K is 390 credits on this page; fifteen seconds of Seedance 2.0 at 1080p is 1,021. Short and square favours Seedance; long and wide favours H3.

Single-subject motion. A person walking, an animal running, a dancer — H3 keeps limbs attached better than most.
Steady camera language. Slow pushes, follows and pans come back clean; whip pans and complex rigs less so.
Vertical work. 9:16 at 2K is genuinely usable for feeds without an upscale pass.
Reference consistency. Give it two or three angles of a character and the face carries across separate renders.
